She was discovered by a concerned member of the public, who took her to their home and made a call to the ISPCA’s National Animal Cruelty Helpline.
ISPCA Animal Welfare Inspector Jimmy McCormack went to their aid and said: “Hope was a shocking sight, absolutely skin and bone. She appeared to have been wandering and fending for herself for some time, she was very weak and malnourished and limping badly.
I picked her up and brought her with me and despite all she has went through, her gentle nature shone through”.
Hope, named for her fighting spirit and positive demeanour, underwent an urgent veterinary assessment, which confirmed that she was dangerously underweight and suffering from a painful injury to her leg, which was likely the result of trauma or neglect. She had open sores and alopecia, and the vet said, it was the worst case of emaciation that she had ever seen.
Hope received the urgent veterinary care she desperately needed, including treatment for her leg injury, and a carefully managed feeding plan at the ISPCA’s National Animal Centre, to help her regain her strength.
Jimmy added: “I was relieved she was found in time. Thanks to the empathy of the couple who found her, we could give her the second chance she deserves. Hope thrived in ISPCA care and turned into the most amazing dog and has since found her forever home, where she will have all her needs met for the rest of her days”.
The ISPCA has over twenty other Lurcher dogs, ranging from puppies to retirement age, patiently waiting for their chance of new loving homes. Sadly, the breed constantly gets overlooked in kennels for smaller dogs, but they really are one of the most loving, sweetest, and gentle breeds, making them such wonderful family pets.
Each of these beautiful dogs has a unique rescue story, as they patiently wait for their second chance. By adopting a lurcher, you not only give a rescued dog a new home, but you will also be opening up a kennel space, so the ISPCA can help even more animals in need.
