Christmas is a magical time of year, but it’s important to remember that the festivities can pose unexpected risks to our pets. The ISPCA is here to help with 5 essential tips to ensure your furry companions stay safe, healthy, and stress-free during the holiday season. Let’s make this Christmas merry and bright for every member of the family, paws included!
1. FESTIVE COSTUMES
Some pets may find wearing costumes stressful. Consider a festive collar or bandana instead so it doesn’t limit their movement or breathing.
2. TOYS
A pet might take an interest in a toy long after a child has discarded it. Small parts can be swallowed and cause stomach issues later, even if it is not food.
3. KEEP THEM INDOORS
Make sure your pets don’t escape through an open front or unlocked side gate this Winter. It’s important they’re microchipped with an ID tag should they get out. Reflective collars, leashes or tags are all great ways to help motorists see you during dark winter days.
4. FOOD & PLANTS
The following foods are toxic to pets: Stuffing, mince pies, alcohol, macademia nuts, chestnuts, Christmas cake, Xylitol, blue cheese, cooked bones, raisins/currants, chocolate and onions.
Poinsettia, mistletoe, pine oil and holly could also poison pets if ingested.
5. INDOOR HAZARDS
Keep wires, candles and decorations out of reach from curious paws and noses if lighting candles or plugging in ornaments. Try and anchor your tree to the wall, put fragile ornaments high up and cover your tree’s water container.
By following these simple tips from the ISPCA, you can ensure a safe, happy, and stress-free Christmas for you and your beloved pets. Wishing you all a joyful and pet-friendly holiday season!
